The 'Blood' Moon at Maximum Eclipse ...
The sky in our region was totally clear for the total eclipse of the moon on the night of Sunday January 20, 2019. This is my favorite picture from the eclipse. It is enhanced to bring out the background stars when the moon was in its maximum phase of the eclipse. Usually, you can't see any stars around the moon due to its brightness, but during total eclipses, the moon is so dull, the stars can be visible without the lunar glare. The color red in the moon is the result of the light from the sun skimming through the outer atmosphere of the earth with most of it being absorbed except for the longer wave red light which is then reflected off the moon back to earth.
